About Ivanec

The Town of Ivanec, the second largest in Varaždin County, is located at the foot of the northern slopes of Mount Ivanščica (1061m) in the plain of the Upper Basin of the Bednja River. Preserved written documents confirm its existence and age. Ivanec was mentioned for the first time in the charter of Ivan Paližna, prior of Bela, dated June 22, 1396. The beginnings of Ivanec go back to the 13th century and "are connected to the chapel of St. John the Baptist - built on the site of the former Old Town.

Today, Ivanec is the second largest town in Varaždin County and occupies an area of 95 ha. It is located in the western part of the county and occupies the southern part of the microregion called the Upper Basin of the Bednja River. The central part of the Ivančica massif is formed by Triassic dolomites and limestones with Tertiary deposits at the base. The northern slopes of Mt. Ivančica are particularly steep. The Bistrica stream has distinctly hilly features in its upper course.

According to W. Köppen's climate classification, the climate of Ivanec belongs to the so-called moderately warm, rainy climates. In this climate, there is snow and frost in the cold part of the year, but there are also warm periods, so long-term snow cover is not a regular occurrence. This type of climate is also called the beech climate, after the predominant forest vegetation, and is very important for farming, as it is suitable for growing corn.
